BMW i8 the Roadster Arrives
CHANGE AFTER 3 YEARS - On sale from 2014, the BMW i8 will be in the car showrooms next year with two big changes: the Roadster version without the roof and the revised hybrid system. The German manufacturer shows these new features at the Los Angeles Motor Show and updates a car with a personality that stands out in the high-performance sports scene thanks to its very elaborate and flashy bodywork. Next to the "normal" i8 Coupé next year is the roadster, without the roof, equipped with an electrically foldable fabric hood that can be operated in motion up to a speed of 50 km / h. The BMW stylists have redesigned the rear area of the car, where there is no longer the big glass of the Coupé: behind the seats, there are two humps and among these, there is a small windbreak, which serves to eliminate the vortices of air when driving with an open roof.
MORE SPACE ON BOARD - The BMW i8 Roadsterit has two seats and not four like the Coupé, but the back ones are considered lucky: only small children or people can sit down. In place of the rear seats, there are two storage compartments on the i8 Roadster that can hold 92 liters, according to the German manufacturer, which improves the capacity of the small front trunk (behind the driver's cab is the engine): the cockpit it contains only 154 liters. The sport is based on the refined monocoque carbon fiber frame of the i8 Coupé, stiffened in some areas to increase its rigidity and compensate for the lack of the roof: there are specific doors, new reinforcements, and a dedicated windshield frame. The weight of the Roadster is over 60 kg compared to the Coupé and stands at 1,595 kg without liquids,
RENEWED HYBRID - The German company will debut on the BMW i8 Roadster series of updates and improvements that will be taken from the Coupé, starting from the new opening on the front bonnet, the most visible modification among those announced: in 2018 the front lights also change, "check" the BMW logo on the rear pillar and 20-inch lightened alloy wheels and two new exterior colors arrive. The multimedia system now receives a new touchscreen in the dashboard. The most interesting innovations, however, concern the hybrid engine, always made up of a three-liter turbo petrol of 1.5 liters (231 hp). The batteries and the electric unit are changing: the battery now has 11.6 kWh of energy (it was 7.1) and should ensure travel up to 55 km in zero-emission driving mode, according to BMW, while the engine electric gains 12 hp and reaches 143 hp. So the total system power is now 374 hp against the 362 hp of the previous version. The i8 Coupé has performance in line with the old model and shoots from 0-100 km / h in 4.4 seconds, 0.2 seconds less than the Roadster.
